Mexico: Teachers’ Strike in Oaxaca

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 20th, 2006 | Trackback

Striking teachers who occupied the main square in Oaxaca since mid-May but were forcibly cleared out by police June 14 have vowed to protest again, causing election officials to wonder if the unrest might prevent the July 2 presidential election from being carried out in the state. The police sweep produced clashes with protesters and many injuries but no deaths. Further demonstrations could also turn violent, and protesters reportedly may try to close the airport or main highway to Mexico City. In other news, Tijuana’s mayor stated that making the notorious city as safe as its neighbor to the north, San Diego, may be impossible. He came to power 18 months ago on that promise, but with only 18 months remaining in his term he admits he cannot do it.
