Pacific Rim: Waves from New Zealand Storm Lash Americas

In a clear indication of how connected our world can be, an intense low pressure system several hundred miles off New Zealand caused hurricane force winds that pushed huge waves eastward, resulting in heavy surf from Northern Chile to Southern California June 18-20. Beachfront homes and businesses were damaged from Peru to Mexico, but no deaths or injuries were reported. Among the many reports of damage on this long stretch of Pacific coast were two miles of flooding of Acapulco’s famous Costera Miguel Aleman boulevard and the closing of the resorts beaches, flooded seaside restaurants in Puerto Escondido, 15-foot waves wiping out homes in Puerto Corinto, Nicaragua, and 100 homes damaged in Trujillo, Peru. In Southern California, 10-foot surf pounded the coast from San Diego to Los Angeles.
