Italy: Taxi Crisis Solved; Fake Watches in Naples Deter Criminals

The protests by taxi drivers that paralyzed central Rome and other cities ended July 17 when negotiators won concessions from the government on its plan to reform taxi service. Cab services should return to normal. In Naples, the government plan to give fake plastic Rolex watches to tourists to avoid snatch thefts appears to have succeeded after just one week. Petty crime in Naples and surrounding areas is down now that the cheap watches adorn tourists’ wrists and thieves realize there’s little to gain by snatching them.
