Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia: Piracy in Malacca Straits
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Piracy has been a problem for decades in the Malacca Straits, a busy shipping channel between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, and three incidents occurred recently despite a concerted effort by these three countries to reduce the practice. Two UN-chartered ships on their way to Indonesia’s Aceh province in Sumatra were attacked and lost cash and construction materials. A Japanese cargo ship was also attacked but fended off the pirates with high-pressure hoses. Large vessels are usually the targets because they are more likely to carry goods the pirates can profit from, but all boats are at risk. Around the world, piracy has increased 168 percent in the past ten years, with cruise ships becoming targets off the coast of Somalia.
