Bahamas: Malaria Eradicated on Great Exuma Island

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 15th, 2006 | Trackback

A limited outbreak of malaria on Great Exuma island has ended after three consecutive 15-day breeding periods have passed without additional cases. A total of 19 cases were diagnosed, four occurring in travelers after visiting the island. The last case was confirmed on June 19. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control still recommends preventive doses of chloroquine for travelers to the island, but malaria is not considered endemic to the Bahamas. Only one case occurred in 2005 and no cases were diagnosed in the preceding five years.
