Haiti: Border Violence and Spike in Kidnapping
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Violent gang activity on the Haitian side of the Malpasse-Jimani border crossing to the Dominican Republic prompted the U.S. Embassy to declare it off-limits to personnel and to urge Americans to avoid the area. The border post remains open but gangs have attacked cars with rocks and some vehicles have been fired upon. In other news, kidnapping for ransom has suddenly become a major problem in Haiti. More than 100 cases have been reported this year, with 47 occurring in July alone. Both locals and foreigners have been taken, and police lack the equipment and experience to successfully combat the problem because the gangs are well-organized and heavily armed.
