Kenya: American Climber Dies on Mt. Kenya, Crime Surge in Nairobi, and an Incident in the Maasai Mara

An American died on Mt. Kenya when he got lost in heavy snow on his descent after reaching the summit. He was found Aug. 16. The incident is a reminder about the risk of traveling alone in the wilderness. Some 45 climbers have died on the mountain in the past 16 years. In other news, the Russian ambassador was stabbed with a machete during a highway robbery near the town of Thika when he was returning from the Mt. Kenya region and slowed his car to avoid a child. He is hospitalized in serious condition. A U.S. Embassy employee was robbed on her way to work in Nairobi by a gang of bandits who took her possessions but left the car. The incident was one of at least a dozen violent crimes in a two-week period against Embassy personnel. And American and British tourists were robbed by an armed gang in the luxury Mara Porini Camp in the Maasai Mara game reserve. The robbers, armed with AK-47s, ransacked two tents and stole cash and valuables before fleeing toward the Tanzanian border. Police believe this was an isolated incident because game parks have been mostly free of crime.
