Turkey: Terrorist Bombings Target Tourist Areas

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | August 29th, 2006 | Trackback

Five bomb blasts in less than 24 hours killed three people and injured dozens in popular tourist areas Aug. 27-28. A Kurdish militant group calling itself the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons claimed responsibility for four of the five explosions and warned tourists to stay out of Turkey, saying that the country is not safe. The first bombing occurred in an Istanbul suburb, then three bombs exploded in the Mediterranean port of Marmaris and the fifth and most destructive blast occurred in Antalya, where three people were killed. The Freedom Falcons are a hard-line splinter group of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which has been fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey since 1984. The Freedom Falcons have concentrated their attacks on cities and tourist sites in western Turkey. More attacks cannot be ruled out.
