U.K. and USA: Airline Security

Restrictions on carry-on bags for flights originating in or transiting through the U.K. have eased since a total ban on carry-ons went into effect August 1o in response to an alleged terrorist plot. The rules may continue to fluctuate, but currently passengers are allowed to carry aboard one bag the size of an attaché case (approximately 17 x 13 x 6 inches [45 x 35 x 16 cm.]). Handbags and purses are allowed but must be packed inside the one permitted carry-on. Computers, cell phones and iPods are permitted, but the ban on liquids remains. Passengers may purchase beverages once they clear security, however, and carry them aboard. Restrictions in the U.S. are slightly different. The TSA allows up to 4 ounces of liquid nonprescription medicine but no beverages other than baby formula, even if purchased after clearing security. Electronic equipment is permitted and carry-on bags are allowed so long as they contain no prohibited items.
