United Kingdom: Rail Strikes, New Security Training for Heathrow Express Staff and BAA Airports

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 29th, 2006 | Trackback

The threatened strike by train drivers for Gatwick Express Sept. 8 was canceled following negotiations, but strikes on Sept. 11, 22 and 25 are possible depending on the success or failure of the talks. Striking drivers of South West Trains shut down 90 percent of service into London Aug. 29 and intend to strike again Sept. 8 and 11 unless an agreement is reached. Staff of the Heathrow Express rail service received Israeli security training for spotting terrorists and found it so effective that all frontline staff at Britain’s seven airports run by British Airports Authority (BAA) may receive similar training. The techniques involve observing tiny but telltale bits of body language. In other airport news, baggage restrictions should be eased by the end of September, when authorities expect to permit larger carry-on bags than currently allowed. The ban on liquids, however, will remain.
