Mexico: Baja California Survives Hurricane John

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 12th, 2006 | Trackback

The resort area of Los Cabos on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula experienced little damage when Hurricane John swept over it Sept. 1, but some areas to the north were hit with 20 inches of rain, high winds and flooding. Power lines were downed and buildings swamped in the city of La Paz, and hundreds of homes were washed away or flooded in Mulege. Los Barrilles, Santiago and Santa Rosalia also suffered significant damage, but the cities are functioning again and the cleanup is underway. The full 1,200 miles of Highway 1 from Tijuana to Los Cabos is passable by car. Debris has been cleared away and there is no need for four-wheel-drive vehicles. The principal tourist area of the peninsula was spared and business there is back to normal.
