Caribbean: Break-ins at Vacation Rentals a Growing Problem

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 2 comments | October 31st, 2006 | Trackback

According to an Oct. 29 report in the Washington Post, break-ins at small hotels and vacation rentals on various Caribbean islands is a growing problem. Statistics are hard to find but local press reports suggest that the crime has occurred with increasing frequency in the past two years when prior to that it was almost unknown. Incidents have occurred in Anguilla, Aruba, Bonnaire, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and other islands. The lesson is not to let your guard down even when on vacation, and lock your valuables in safes whenever possible.

While this is happening with greater frequency even on the tiny island of Nevis, it is far from epidemic proportions and should not deter you from visitng. Many of the “break-ins” are actually people leaving their doors unlocked, leaving valuables outisde by the pool etc. Just plain common sense would put a halt to most of the crime. Would you leave your doors at home unlocked at then go out for the evening?

Also many of the break-ins are occuring in villas that are vacant for six months out of the year, and are built on secluded parts of the island. I would venture a guess that this happens all to often in holiday homes in the UK and US too.

All in all if you are interested in Nevis, feel free to see my Nevis Blog at www.nevisblog.com or my Nevis Website at www.nevis1.com Maybe the information there will help to allay any fears that you might have.

Cheers, Michael
