France: Further Unrest in Paris Suburbs Feared

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 24th, 2006 | Trackback

A year has passed since riots by disenfranchised Muslim youths occurred in the Paris suburbs, and authorities worry that such protests could erupt again. They acknowledge that the conditions that spurred last year’s protests still exist, and in recent weeks gang members have shown that they are capable of attacking police, not spontaneously, but with planning, and their intent now seems to be to injure officers rather than just destroy property. Five times in recent weeks they have attacked police, most recently Oct. 22 when they burned a bus in the southern suburb of Grigny and then attacked police and firefighters with stones as they tried to douse the flames. Last year’s riots began Oct. 27, spread throughout the country and lasted three weeks.
