Hungary: Unrest in Budapest Mars Celebration, May Continue

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 24th, 2006 | Trackback

Ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of Hungary’s uprising against Soviet rule Oct. 23 were disrupted by thousands of anti-government protesters who clashed with police. The unrest occurred in several places and was spawned by ongoing discontent with Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany and his admitted lies about the economy. Protesters have been demonstrating against him since Sept. 17, camping out in Kossuth Square from which they were removed Oct. 23 to clear the site for commemoration ceremonies. The possibility of further demonstrations is high.
