Mexico: Oaxaca Crisis May Be Ending

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 3 comments | October 10th, 2006 | Trackback

The strike in Oaxaca that has paralyzed the popular colonial city since May spread to Mexico City Oct. 9 when thousands of strikers marched 280 miles to the capital city, but late that night the government and protest leaders reached a tentative agreement to end the dispute. Some of the barricades in Oaxaca will reportedly come down and protesters will move out and let local police take control of the city center under federal police supervision. Demonstrators are still demanding the Oaxaca state governor resign, and union leaders said they will now pressure Mexico’s Senate to force him to step down. President Vicente Fox has vowed to resolve the conflict before he leaves office Dec. 1.

I am glad to hear that an end is in site for this strife in Oaxaca.

It is a great place to visit. I had fun there this past January (see my website www.dougs-travels.com for some stories from that trip). I studied Spanish in Oaxaca for three weeks. I shudder to think what this disruption has done for the schools, hotels and many other tourist-dependant businesses in Oaxaca. I hope they survive to see the high season this year!
