Philippines: Bombings in Mindanao, Threats in Manila

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 17th, 2006 | Trackback

Shortly after officials warned of a threat of Islamic terrorist bombings in Mindanao, explosions occurred at three sites over two days Oct. 10 and 11. One bomb killed six and the others injured several people. They occurred in a village near Isulan, in the town of Makilala, and in Cotabato City. The attacks resembled the modus operandi of militants with links to Jemaah Islamiyah, a group responsible for many terrorist attacks in Indonesia, including the 2002 Bali bombings. Further attacks cannot be ruled out. In related news, officials are concerned that large-scale attacks could occur in Manila and other cities at the end of Ramadan. According to unnamed sources within Filipino military intelligence, terrorists have chosen their targets and a real risk of attacks exists. Ramadan ends Oct. 24.
