Sri Lanka: Clashes Continue while Peace Talks Resume
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Fighting between government forces and the Tamil Tigers has escalated in recent weeks, all but destroying the peace process that had held so much hope just a short time ago. Travel to the north and east remains risky. The U.S. State Department advises avoiding the area north of a line following the highway from Puttalam through Anuradhapura to Trincomalee, and east to Batticaloa. The State Department also reported that it has no indication of a threat to tourist areas in the Cultural Triangle, including territory around Anaradhapura and Polonnoruwa. The Tamil Tigers staged a suicide attack on a naval facility in the tourist city of Galle in the south Oct. 18, but tourists were not targeted and none were injured. On a hopeful note, peace talks were scheduled to continue Oct. 28-29 in Geneva and the ruling and opposition parties pledged to unite in their resolve to achieve peace with the Tigers, but given the recent violence a breakthrough is not expected.
