Bangladesh: Election Violence Feared
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Thousands of protesters demanding election reform shut down transport networks in cities around the country Nov. 12 and closed the main port of Chittagong. At least one person was killed in Dhaka and some 50 injured when police fired rubber bullets and drove a car into the crowd to disperse the demonstrators. Unrest has been brewing for months and came to a head in late October when an interim government took control in advance of January elections. Political violence at that time claimed 15 lives. An alliance of 14 opposition parties is behind the protests demanding the election commissioners resign, claiming they are biased toward the outgoing ruling party. Nationwide strikes and other protests are probable from now until the elections are held, and violence is likely.
