Brazil: Air Traffic Delays Continue

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | December 13th, 2006 | Trackback

Brazil’s troubled air traffic system suffered another setback Dec. 5 when a communications system failed, forcing authorities to halt virtually all takeoffs from Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, and Sao Paulo’s domestic airport. Chaos ruled as hundreds of flights were delayed and many passengers had to spend the night at airports. It took a day to clear out the delayed passengers once the system was repaired, and the head of Brazil’s aviation agency said there had never before been such a collapse. The incident suggests the country has a long way to go to fix the system, which has been slowed since September when air traffic controllers began refusing to handle more flights than international guidelines recommend in response to a collision of two aircraft over the Amazon that produced Brazil’s worst airline disaster. Delays could last well into 2007.
