India: Airports on High Terror Alert

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | December 13th, 2006 | Trackback

Indian airports are on high alert because of intelligence reports that Pakistan-based terrorists may be planning to hijack a plane to force the release of an Indian Kashmiri facing a death sentence for a 2001 attack on India’s parliament. Mohammed Afzal was convicted of conspiracy in the attack, and has filed for clemency. Kashmiri leaders have warned that carrying out his sentence could inflame the insurgency in Kashmir. Meanwhile, increased security could cause delays at airports throughout the country.
