Jamaica: Tourism Boost Expected Despite High Crime

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | December 26th, 2006 | Trackback

Despite a soaring crime rate and a high-profile tourist murder in August in Montego Bay, Jamaica expects an increase in visitors this winter. Most tourists stay in the north coast resorts of Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios, where there are relatively few murders compared to the Kingston area and the rest of the island. Still, this year 176 homicides have occurred in Montego Bay compared to 144 in all of 2005, including a gang-related triple murder Dec. 15 near the tourist area. Tourism officials are optimistic because of the addition of new hotel rooms and marketing efforts to new countries.
