Caribbean: Passports Needed to Return to U.S.
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Beginning Jan. 23, Americans flying into the U.S. from Caribbean islands, Mexico or Canada will have to arrive with a passport to be allowed entry. Prior to that, traveling with only a driver’s license will be adequate. The change came about as a security measure mandated by the U.S. Homeland Security and State departments. The U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are exempt from the law because they are U.S. administered islands. Both have built marketing campaigns around their privileged position of being “non-passport” islands for American tourists, and appear to be reaping the rewards.

They’ve been warning folks for so long about this that if you haven’t taken the effort to get a passport by now you sort of deserve all the hassle you get.
