India: Communal Violence Hits Bangalore
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Communal violence can erupt almost anywhere in India given the right provocation, and even the tech-savvy city of Bangalore is not immune. Hindu-Muslim riots occurred Jan. 19 and 21, first when thousands of Muslims protested the hanging of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, clashing with police, ransacking Hindu-owned shops and burning cars. Then, two days later, a Hindu nationalist party rally turned into a riot of attacks on Muslim shops, stoning of cars and clashes with police. One 12-year-old boy was killed and dozens injured. The booming tech industry, however, was largely unaffected because its offices are outside the city center. The violence was the worst in the city since 1994.
