India: Delhi Airports Fogged In, Tourist Protection Increased in Kerala

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 10th, 2007 | Trackback

Fogged in airports are a rite of winter in New Delhi, and where there is fog there are flight delays. Air traffic in and out of the domestic airport gets especially backed up because few of India’s domestic planes or pilots are equipped to take off or land in bad weather. The airport also runs at one-third over capacity, so quickly becomes overcrowded. The international airport has fewer cancellations because of better aircraft and skilled pilots, but delays are still common. In the southern state of Kerala, security has been increased at all tourist sites because of a knife attack on a Swedish couple as they were boarding a boat to tour the popular Periyar Tiger Reserve. The attack was an isolated incident by a troubled man who reportedly was drunk, but authorities acted swiftly to bolster confidence in tourist safety throughout the state.
