Spain: Madrid Bombing Derails ETA Peace Talks

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | January 3rd, 2007 | Trackback

A bombing blamed on the Basque separatist group ETA flattened a five-story parking garage at Madrid’s international airport Dec. 30, injuring 26 and leaving two Ecuadorian immigrants missing. The bombing also flattened the peace process to end the decades-long Basque separatist conflict, which appeared to be close to a resolution. ETA had declared a cease-fire in March that it called permanent, vowing to pursue a negotiated settlement with the government. This bombing caused the interior minister to label the peace process over. ETA has not officially claimed responsibility for the bombing, but a caller who warned authorities before the incident claimed to represent the group. It is too early to tell if peace talks can be resurrected.

This incident intrigues me. Things like this don’t happen as frequently in the US as they do in other countries. Was curious how this might relate to the “New World Order” of things?
