Switzerland: World Economic Forum Demonstrations Possible
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The World Economic Forum takes place in Davos Jan. 24-27. In past years, anti-globalization protesters caused significant traffic disruptions in Basel, Bern, Chur, Davos, Lucerne, Winterthur and Zurich and may do so again this year. No terrorist threats have been made, however, and authorities consider the overall risk of violence to be low. Protester numbers have also dropped in recent years, with fewer than 5,000 demonstrators coming to Davos annually since 2002. Davos is also strategically located, with all access routes easily controlled by police, and the Swiss technique of using water cannons in January is an effective means of crowd control.
