Colombia: Killings in Cartagena

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | February 21st, 2007 | Trackback

For years the colonial city of Cartagena on the Caribbean coast has remained relatively immune from the violence that has plagued the rest of the country, but two recent incidents have authorities worried that the city’s peaceful reputation may be eroding. A French businessman was shot and killed when he left a fish shop Feb. 16, and an Italian tourist was killed during a botched mugging by motorcycle assailants Feb. 11. Street crime is no stranger to the city, but killings are unusual. Authorities immediately offered significant cash rewards for information leading to the arrest of suspects in both cases.

I;ve travel to Cartagena approximately three times and now after hearing about the killing; I’m having second thoughts. I can only hope the Police get this problem under control, because I think Cartagena will become a favorite vacation destinaion for many American. Also I will probably put my investment ambitions on cool-down mode….
