India: Water Conflict Riles Bangalore, Karnataka
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Bangalore and other cities in Karnataka state are edgy following a long-awaited court decision apportioning water from the Cauvery River to neighboring Tamil Nadu. After a preliminary ruling in favor of Tamil Nadu in 1991 extensive rioting killed 18 people. Now after 17 years of hearings the court has determined that Karnataka must release substantially more water to its downstream neighbor than it has since that preliminary ruling. Protests occurred in Bangalore at the news, schools and businesses closed as a precaution, and general strikes were called or were being considered. Demonstrations are likely and violence is possible.
