Indonesia: Jakarta Floods Continue; Dengue Fever Outbreak
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Jakarta is suffering from its worst flooding in five years and the rains have continued, giving little relief to the quarter of a million people displaced by the high water. Authorities are working to combat flood-related diseases such as diarrhea, cholera and skin ailments. Dengue fever is also a problem, but is not restricted to flooded areas. Standing water gives mosquitoes a place to breed, and dengue fever, which is carried by mosquitoes, occurs here every year. More than 600 cases were reported since the flooding began, and more than 3100 have been logged this year. Authorities have blamed overbuilding for the extensive flooding, as shopping malls and other major construction projects have filled in former catchment areas for rainwater.
