Mexico: Canadians Shot in Acapulco; Police Killed by Drug Gangs
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Two Canadian tourists were grazed by bullets in the heart of Acapulco’s tourist district Feb. 4 when someone fired into their hotel lobby. The city has been the site of ongoing hostilities between rival drug cartels, and police believe this incident was related to these turf wars. Last month more than 7,000 federal police and soldiers were sent to the area to combat the gangs, but incidents continue. On Feb. 6 gunmen attacked two police stations well away from the tourist zone and killed at least seven police officers. Other stations were evacuated. In an incident most likely unrelated to the drug gangs, a 19-year-old Canadian tourist was killed when struck by a car outside a nightclub. Police at first claimed he was killed in a hit-and-run accident but witnesses said that they had seen him leave the club with injuries and then get severely beaten outside by club employees and taxi drivers. They said he was struck by the car when trying to escape his assailants.
