Mexico: Federal Police Patrolling Acapulco Tourist District
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Federal police are now patrolling the hotel zone in Acapulco around the clock in an effort to curtail drug gang violence and protect the tourism industry. Officers set up roadblocks on the main beachfront road Feb. 23 to search vehicles and passengers for drugs and weapons, paying special attention to SUVs and pickup trucks with tinted windows, vehicles of choice for gunmen. Thousands of troops have moved into the state of Guerrero and other areas plagued by drug cartels, and a federal official said the patrols in Acapulco will be permanent. Acapulco has seen a significant increase in drug gang violence in the past year and is about to enter a peak period for tourism.

We were in Acapulco May 25-June 1 2007. A word of caution to would be jewelery buyers. Plateria La Joya en el mercado has glass instead of precious stones in their silver jewellery. We bought a purple and white glass silver ring for $730 that was allegedly tanzanite and white topaz.
