Thailand: Don Muang Airport to Reopen; Tightened Security in Bangkok
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok will reopen March 25 for domestic flights on Thai Airways and three other smaller airlines because of ongoing problems at the new Suvarnabhumi airport. The switch could cause confusion if a connection needs to be made to a domestic flight from an international flight because they would be using different airports. Authorities will decide in six months whether to keep Don Muang open and if so, whether to add more traffic to it. In other news, two Russian tourists were slain in their deck chairs outside their hotel on Jomtien Beach in Pattaya Feb. 24. Police suspect a gang run by foreigners in what appears to be a senseless crime. In Bangkok, statements by two government officials suggesting that the capital city is at risk for attacks by Muslim insurgents from southern Thailand have prompted Australia, Britain and Canada to advise their citizens to be especially cautious in Bangkok. Security is being tightened in the city for a major Buddhist holiday March 3.
