The celebration is always festive but fraught with crime. The islands have been suffering from a dramatic increase in crime the last few years as the economy has boomed through development of natural gas and oil resources and Trinidad has become a prominent transshipment point for cocaine. The number of murders has tripled in five years and kidnapping is a growing problem. Some residents are calling for a police crackdown while others say police death squads are already operating, because suspects have recently been shot and killed.
