United Kingdom: Train Wreck Blamed on Faulty Switch Points

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | February 28th, 2007 | Trackback

A report on the Feb. 23 derailing of an express train from London to Glasgow revealed that the accident was caused by faulty switching points on the track that were supposed to have been visually inspected Feb. 18 but were not. Railway officials have vowed to uncover why parts were missing from the points and why the routine inspection had not been carried out. Inspections of some 700 of the approximately 5,000 similar sets of points around the country showed all in working order, and officials believe the national rail network is safe. Further investigations are likely. Only a red light spotted by the engineer of a following train prevented it from plowing into the accident scene and derailing as well.
