Brazil, Paraguay: Dengue Fever Outbreak
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |An outbreak of dengue fever is occurring in Mato Grosso do Sul, where more than 42,000 cases have been reported since January, with more than 28,000 in the city of Campo Grande alone. Only six deaths have occurred. Officials say the scope of the outbreak has been caused by especially heavy rains this year, which are now diminishing. In neighboring Paraguay, some 16,200 cases have been reported since January but doctors believe that as many as 150,000 could be infected. In all of 2006 only 1,600 cases were reported in Paraguay.
