Malaysia: Tourists Voice Complaints, Officials Listen
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Tourism officials are responding to tourist feedback that revealed issues some visitors have with travel in the country. High on the list are dirty toilets in and around Kuala Lumpur, not just public toilets but restaurant facilities as well; rude and dishonest taxi drivers; and pickpockets in crowded shopping malls and street markets, in particular in the Bukit Bintang area. The government has established a committee with representatives from immigration, housing, customs, police and Malaysia Airlines to address ways to improve the tourist experience. Despite the complaints, travel around Malaysia is generally safe and efficient.

Nomally we take taxi from the same start place to same destination is about RM10++ by meter. So we suspec the meter is fraud meter and it jumps fast. And when we question the driver why not using bangsar road ,maybe faster , but he said very rude” Kenapa tak cakap awal” and then when we said we dicided to make complain , then he’s giving reason ” Tadi bangsar jalan jam”. So the meter runs really quick even when the car stop, the driver still didint really stop the meter. and in less then 1 min time, the meter increase another 20 sens. So fast.
Wanted to take a taxi from Bukit Bintang to our condo in Terman Seputeh Wednesday evening May 23 at 10:30, but most of the drivers only wanted to go on fixed fares like 10 RM, Asking them to use meter they just drove of. I got the number of one of them HWB 5966. Finally we got one who were wiling to go by meter, price ended at 5:20 RM, we are foringers but have lived in KL for more than 4 years.
Taxi: HWC4241
Driver: chinese man with spec
Date: 16/6/07
Time: Around 11.00 - 11.15pm
Pick Up location: KL Sental
Type of Taxi: Taxi coupon
Fee: From KL Sentral to Traders Hotel
Passenger: Only 1
Complaints: When i reached KL Sentral, it’s around 1030pm. After taking the dinner, i went to KL Sentral taxi counter to buy for the coupon. There was 2 taxi counter, one is intended for the high class cab & another one is the normal cab with red & white colors car. I was so unfortunate to get a very rude taxi driver where he scolded & blamed me for spoilt his carlock. The truth is, the car had this problem since early as i also been a car driver, i know the car lock wont be easily spoilt by the way i open up the car door. Then the chinese car driver keep on nagging me for spoilt his car & blah blah blah. It was really ignoring as i was tired as just back from business trip, & then with this taxt driver who is rude & uneducated & at the same time paying kinda expensive fee for his lousy service, i was really mad. Then the taxt driver demanded me to pay additional RM1 for the luggage behind in the very RUDE ways. When i reach the hotel, since the door already spoint, so i cannot open up the door from inside, he doesn’t help me up even a little bit. U can see how RUDE is the driver. Luckyly the hotel staff spot something was wrong & help up me on door opening. Then that taxi driver asked me for the recipe, he returned it to me followed by a RUDE tone asking me ” WHERE IS THE ONE RIGGGIT”. Oh Gosh.. It just one ringgit, i can pay for RM10, RM1 is just nothing to me, just that the driver doesn’t feed ashame on his bad attitude, bad service, bad tempered at all, he is a thick face type of person which will never improve himself. I felt sorry for malaysian for having this type of the taxi driver in place as from here, i can tell that, we will never can improve the standard of our taxi driver since the relavant party doesn’t do anything toward the compiant even if the put on the compliant no 39900, to encourage people to voice out the bad side of the taxi driver. But it was useless if they never take any actio agianst the complaints. It just looks nice. In that case, dun waste the advertisement fee by print out so many stickers & stick it to the cab if the relavant party never takes any action. Dun put it on if you cannot fulfil it as it will only wasting our money in sending the useless SMS to 39900.
KL is hostile to pedestrians. The public transport is very primitive. Cycling is not possible. The traffic is horrendous. City planning is awful. The road system is like spaghetti. But, by far the worst thing about KL is the taxi service.
This morning we had a flight to catch from Subang Airport. We had to wait over 30 minutes to find a taxi that would take us. We agreed to pay RM50. Although the trip normally takes 30 minutes, the driver took a route that, plus traffic jams, took around 90 minutes. By the time we arrived at the airport, our plane had already departed. Then, we spent an hour in the Berjaya Air office where we were forced to buy new tickets for the following day. After which, we took a taxi from Subang Airport back to KL, which took only 30 minutes with no traffic jams.

Nomally we take taxi from the same start place to same destination is about RM3.30 — RM3.80 by meter. But by his meter is RM6.00. We was question about his meter, But he force us to pay according to his meter. And also inform us that he suppose to charge RM10.00 for this, because he is using meter so he just collect RM6.00 according to the meter. We did ask for the receipt. the receipt he gave is under “LIMO & TAXI SERVICE”.
I’m chinese from China. I feel very unconfortable about it. The taxi driver treat us as a fool. He is not only cheating us, but more likely rob us. This kind of bad manners is unacceptable. I beleive he can not represent other malaysian’s attitude. But I highly recommend to take some action on such taxi. Prevent this kind of bad manners from spread widely.
