Morocco: Police on High Alert after Terrorism Arrests

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | March 21st, 2007 | Trackback

Police are on high alert following the arrest of a dozen people in Casablanca on terrorism charges March 14. The roundup came three days after a suicide bomber killed himself and wounded his accomplice in a Casablanca internet café. Police believe the bombers intended to strike another target but the bomb detonated by mistake. The detainees are being held on suspicion of planning attacks targeting a luxury hotel, police station, discos and shopping centers. Foreign security services had previously warned Moroccan officials that terrorists were planning attacks in Morocco because of the country’s friendly relations with Western countries.
