Australia: Drought Threatens Major Cities

Lingering drought has officials on the verge of imposing water restrictions in several places, including Canberra, Melbourne and many towns in New South Wales. Canberra faces the banning of watering gardens and washing cars by July and possibly sooner if rains don’t come. In the last six years the drainage into reservoirs in the area has dropped 63 percent and last year it was barely more than 10 percent of normal. Watering sports fields would also be banned if these restrictions are applied. The government may also be forced to cut back irrigation water to the country’s prime agricultural area, while Melbourne reported its driest 12 months on record with less than half of its average annual rainfall.
