Philippines: Military Called to Curb Election Violence
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Mid-term elections will be held May 14 for 12 senators, the entire House of Representatives and thousands of local officials. Philippine President Gloria Arroyo ordered the military to reinforce the police and disband private armies to quell the violence. Such bloodshed is not uncommon in Philippine elections, but this year it appears to be worse than usual.
