Sri Lanka: Colombo Airport Closes at Night
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Colombo’s international airport will be closed at night from the hours of 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for at least three months because of the threat of air raids by Tamil Tiger rebels. The separatist group that has been fighting the government for more than two decades has launched four nighttime air attacks on military installations since March. One of the targets was a military airport that shares a runway with Bandaranaike International Airport. The Tigers used light aircraft for these raids and were able to escape. Officials gave airlines a week to reschedule flights, then imposed the closure effective May 10.
