Australia: Aboriginal Elders Threaten to Ban Tourists from Uluru

The sacred Aboriginal site of Uluru, or Ayers Rock, may be off limits to tourists if Aboriginal elders follow through on their threat to ban visitors on the landmark in protest of a new federal government policy. The government plans to clamp down on child abuse in some 70 Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory with a six-month ban on alcohol and pornography, but some Aboriginal leaders view the action as reminiscent of assimilation policies that removed children from their families throughout much of the 20th century, creating what is known as the Stolen Generations. The government wants to protect the children, and presumably will not repeat the mistakes of the past, but it needs to get its message across to the Aboriginal communities. Meanwhile, Uluru remains open pending further developments.
