By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 27th, 2007 | Trackback

National elections are being held June 30 to July 10 with final results to be announced in early August. According to the U.S. State Department, the period around the elections may be volatile, with election-related violence between opposing clans and political groups possible in the Highlands region. Provinces of greatest concern are the Southern Highlands, Enga, Western Highlands, Chimbu and Eastern Highlands. Cities where violence is most likely are Port Moresby and Lae. Voting was scheduled in the Southern Highlands June 30, and is planned in Enga July 3, Western Highlands July 6, and Eastern Highlands and Chimbu July 9. Avoid large gatherings or demonstrations.
