Tajikistan: Anti-Luxury Campaign, Carry Documents at All Times
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |President Emomalii Rakhmon is on an anti-luxury campaign as he tries to mold Tajik society to his world view. He signed a law June 8 that bans lavish weddings and funerals, limiting weddings to a single day and restricting the number of guests because of the excessive costs, which he claimed rival the national budget in this impoverished former Soviet Republic. Previously he had banned gold teeth, criticized cell phone use among students, spoken out against Islamic and revealing Western dress in schools and encouraged citizens to drop the Russian-sounding endings “ov” or “ev” from their names as he has. In other news, the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe encouraged all U.S. citizens to carry their passports with valid visas (or copies) at all times to present to local officials if questioned. All foreigners must register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs if staying in the country for more than three days.
