Turkey: Bombing in Istanbul, PKK Cease-Fire

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 13th, 2007 | Trackback

A small bomb outside a clothing shop near the airport in the Istanbul district of Bakirkoy injured 14 people June 10. Officials blamed Kurdish militants for the attack. The device had been placed under a bench and shattered windows of nearby businesses, with injuries caused by flying glass. The incident occurred just two days before the Kurdish separatist group PKK declared a unilateral cease-fire in its conflict with Turkey, saying it was ready for peace negotiations but reserved the right to defend itself. It is too early to tell if the announcement is a political ploy or a good-faith effort on the part of the PKK to address its grievances peacefully. Prior to the announcement, authorities had raised concerns about PKK attacks occurring in the run up to national elections July 22.
