Venezuela: Copa America Soccer Tournament, Safety
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The Copa America soccer tournament is underway through July 19 and will be attended by many thousands of visitors. Travelers are being asked to present proof of immunization against yellow fever and German measles on arrival. Health kiosks have been set up in the international airport arrivals area to vaccinate travelers who do not have proof of immunization, but according to the health ministry, the notice is a recommendation, not mandatory. For information on vaccination requirements, contact the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington or consulates in Boston, Chicago, Houston, Miami, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco or San Juan. Violent crime is high in Venezuela, especially in Caracas and other major cities, where express kidnappings happen regularly, carjackings are frequent, and armed robberies occur in broad daylight.
