Brazil: Air Traffic System in Chaos

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 25th, 2007 | Trackback

A deadly plane crash in Sao Paulo July 17 confirmed the danger of Congonhas airport’s short runway and a few days later a radar outage over the Amazon created havoc in Brazil’s airspace, forcing 20 international flights to divert to other airports or return to their points of origin. For the next three days more than half of all flights in Brazil were delayed or canceled, and on July 25 chaos reigned when the country’s top airline canceled dozens of flights to and from Congonhas airport, causing lengthy delays throughout the country. All of these incidents reflect the problems plaguing the country’s air traffic system that has been in crisis since last September when a commercial aircraft collided with a private jet and crashed in the Amazon. In a move to find a solution to these problems, Defense Minister Waldir Pires, the man in charge of Brazil’s aviation system, was replaced July 25.
