China: Pirated Drinking Water in Beijing
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Officials are investigating a report in the Beijing Times that claimed that more than half of the water coolers in Beijing contain counterfeit water. The report said the jugs are filled with tap water or purified water from small suppliers who place bogus seals on them and pass the water off as name brands. The report said the practice is widespread because name brand water sells for about double the price of water from small suppliers. Tap water in Beijing isn’t reliably safe to drink because of the city’s aging pipes. An official from the government food safety agency said, however, that inspections in May showed that 96 percent of Beijing’s bottled drinking water was safe.
