Fiji: Nurses’ Strike Could Cause Tensions

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 25th, 2007 | Trackback

The Australian government warned its citizens about travel to Fiji in the face of a nurses’ strike that began July 24. Other unions threatened to join the strike amid rumors that the military state of emergency, which was lifted May 31, may be reinstated. All police officers on leave were called back to duty and police are now on 12-hour shifts. The nurses planned to strike peacefully but demonstrations could occur, especially if other unions strike, and police are in place to quell any unrest. The political situation in Fiji remains unresolved after the December 2006 military coup by Voreqe (Frank) Bainimarama, who remains in power as interim prime minister.
