France: Paris Rental Bicycles Ease Commute, Touring
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Bicycles are now available for easy and inexpensive rental at 750 stations throughout Paris. Mayor Bertrand Delanoe launched the service as a way to cut pollution and traffic. The service, called Velib, is offered in eight languages and accepts major credit cards to make it easy for all to use. The cost for a one-day pass is just one euro ($1.36) for the first half hour, one euro for the next half hour, and then a sliding scale up to four euros for additional half hours. The idea is to encourage using bikes for a short time to keep them in circulation. Annual and seven-day passes are also available. For longer rides in Paris’ expansive parks, it’s cheaper to rent from a bicycle shop.
