Italy: Garbage Still Piling Up in Naples

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 11th, 2007 | Trackback

Garbage collection in the province of Naples has been disrupted since May, creating possible health risks throughout the region. Debris has been piling up for weeks and some residents have been burning the accumulating mounds releasing potentially toxic fumes. Authorities have been removing garbage from the tourist areas such as the port of Naples and the city’s central historic district, Pompeii, Sorrento, Positano, the Amalfi Coast and the islands of Capri and Ischia, and health officials have found no outbreaks of disease related to the garbage crisis.
